Alex Newton has worked as a lawyer, journalist, and advisor to government in both national and international contexts. Since 2009, she has been employed as an advisor in Australia’s Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, specializing in legal and social policy. Newton led work on whole-of-government strategies to develop social investment in Australia. In 2010, she created an innovative postgraduate course in transnational business and human rights in the Australian National University’s College of Law; the course will be offered for the fourth time in 2014. Previously, Newton worked with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Policy Committee in New York and, before that, she was a lawyer with the Australian Human Rights Commission.
